What is cross-docking?

Cross-docking is a logistics technique that aims to accelerate goods delivery and increase supply chain efficiency. Here’s how it works:

Goods arrive via inbound trucks at a specially designed logistics facility.

Minimal Storage Time

Instead of storing the goods in a warehouse, they are directly transferred to vehicles handling outgoing shipments. Little or no storage time is required in between.

Efficient Delivery

Supermarkets use cross-docking to consolidate products from multiple suppliers, break down bulk shipments into smaller lots, and reorganise items for efficient delivery to retail stores.

Benefits of cross-docking

Faster Delivery

By eliminating the need for warehouse storage, cross-docking allows companies to deliver products more quickly.

Optimised Inventory Control

Close coordination among supply chain partners (suppliers and freight carriers) ensures efficient inventory management.

Reduced Costs

Cross-docking lowers handling costs, minimises the need for warehouse space, and speeds up the movement of goods through the supply chain.

Lower Risk of Product Spoilage

Cross-docking cuts down on the amount of handling required, so there’s less risk that items will suffer damage. Perishable items aren’t stored in a warehouse for an extended period, there’s less risk of spoilage or product expiration.

Why Dock2Dock?

Dock2Dock is an easy access portal built by experts in cross-docking technology. Cross-docking can be labour intensive with data entry, clunky excel spreadsheets, uploading to labelling software, double-handling, errors, and wastage when using the manual method of crossing-docking. Dock2Dock is built to use EDI which is the preferred method when cross-docking with supermarkets.

You’ll be able to see all cross-dock sales orders in one place. Start by allocating the orders onto outbound shipping orders and Dock2Dock will let the distribution know your orders are on their way. Printing is fully remote allowing you to print to any printer on your network.

You never have to switch to other platforms again. We combine all your cross-dock tracking data into one place, so you can stay on top of your deliveries.
